Usually not, even though the numbers may suggest otherwise. An example: a Salvus Rome 3 weighs 281 kg on a footprint of 50 × 50 cm. That equals more than 1,100 kg/m², while a residential floor is designed for 200 kg/m². Does that mean it won't work? No — because those 200 kg/m² apply to a load evenly distributed across the entire floor, not to a single point.
By comparison: a person weighing 80 kg standing on one leg presses on the floor through a shoe sole of barely 0.02 m². That amounts to 4,000 kg/m² — nearly four times more than the safe. Yet nobody falls through the floor. A floor distributes a point load throughout the structure.
The total weight in the room also matters. A room of 10 m² can carry 2,000 kg according to the standard — in practice, that never happens. A single safe of 281 kg stays well within that limit.
A safe is preferably placed against a load-bearing wall. The safe is also anchored into the wall, so that part of the load — or all of it, if the safe is suspended — is carried by the wall.
Naturally, every situation is assessed individually. In case of doubt, we call on a structural engineer. In some situations, supporting structures or reinforcements need to be provided.
