A fire- and burglary-resistant safe protects your valuables against both theft and fire. Dual certification means the safe has been tested and approved separately for both aspects.
Burglary resistance is certified according to security level S1/S2 (EN 14450) for entry-level models and limited values, or according to grades 0 to 6 (EN 1143-1) for professionally certified safes — the higher the grade, the higher the insurable value. Fire resistance is tested separately, for example according to EN 15659 or NT Fire 017, and ranges from 30 to 120 minutes of protection. Note the difference between paper documents and digital media such as hard drives or USB sticks: digital data is damaged at much lower temperatures.
Only safes with dual certification offer genuinely tested resistance against both fire and burglary.

The best safe for your home doesn't exist — the best safe for your situation does. The right choice depends on what you want to protect, where you want to place the safe and how you use it day to day. For everyday items such as jewellery, documents or some cash, a burglar-resistant home safe of a lower security grade is often sufficient; if you also want protection against fire, choose a fire-resistant safe. If you prefer to keep the safe hidden, a wall safe or floor safe is an interesting option. Also pay attention to the insurable value per grade and to professional anchoring, and check whether your insurer has specific requirements. Installing a safe yourself is perfectly possible, but two things deserve attention. First, the weight: most safes are heavier than expected and difficult to manoeuvre without the right equipment. Second, the fixation: the standard anchoring material supplied is generally only suitable for concrete — on other surfaces, it is often insufficient.
