The EX designation stands for explosive resistance and is an optional addition to the safe grade under EN 1143-1, just like T2 or CD. In the EX test, a charge of solid explosive is detonated inside the safe, followed by an attack with burglary tools — and the door must remain locked. Safes that pass this test carry the EX marking after their grade on the certification plate, for example Grade V EX.
The EX test with solid explosives should not be confused with the lighter GAS test, in which a gas mixture is ignited: the pressure wave of solid explosives is many times faster and more aggressive, and protection against one type of explosion does not automatically protect against the other. EX is therefore the stricter of the two tests.
An EX-certified safe is relevant where the risk profile is highest or where the insurer explicitly requires explosive resistance. In our range, the Chubbsafes TriForce T2 and the Fichet-Bauche InviKtus are certified explosive-resistant.
