Grade 2 safes and fire safes | EN 1143-1 burglary and fire resistant

Grade 2 safes according to EN 1143-1 provide certified burglary resistance for applications with a low to medium-high risk profile. Buying a Grade 2 safe means choosing a versatile solution — Grade 2 is particularly interesting for those who want to combine high fire protection with reliable burglary resistance. Unlike higher grades, Grade 2 allows compliance with the most stringent fire standards, such as EN 1047-1 with 120 minutes of protection for paper and data carriers. For applications requiring burglary protection only, compact Grade 2 burglary-resistant safes are also available

Indicative insurable values – Grade 2 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade II, the indicative insurable value is €25,000 in cash or €50,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 2 safes according to EN 1143-1

Grade 2 safes are certified according to the European standard EN 1143-1 and provide resistance for a low to medium-high risk profile — against an intruder with mechanical and electrical tools and some experience. Suitable for those seeking reliable burglary protection for everyday risks, in both private and professional environments.

During certification, specialised test laboratories attempt to force the safe open using a variety of attack methods — mechanical tools (such as hand tools and crowbars), power tools (such as drills and angle grinders) and thermal tools — under strictly controlled conditions by independent bodies such as ECB·S.

Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For a Grade 2 safe, the resistance level is 70 RU for partial access and 100 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening through which a hand can be inserted, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a larger opening.

According to the standard, Grade 2 safes must be equipped with at least one lock certified to EN 1300, class A or higher. Depending on the model, a second lock can be added — a common combination pairs a key lock with an electronic or mechanical combination lock.

The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to burglary resistance — fire resistance is not part of this standard. Grade 2 safes therefore only provide burglary protection as standard. For those also requiring fire protection, Grade 2 fire-resistant safes are available — Grade 2 allows compliance with the most stringent fire standards, such as EN 1047-1 with 120 minutes of protection for data carriers.

Burglary-tested Grade 2 safes

EN 1143-1 Grade 2 safes and fire safes

Burglary-tested Grade 2 safes

Grade 2 safes exclusively tested against burglary, certified in accordance with EN 1143-1, are intended for applications where burglary protection is the primary requirement and no additional fire protection is needed.

As Grade 2 burglary-resistant safes do not need to combine a fire-resistant construction with the burglary certification, they can be built with particularly thin walls. This allows for a compact and sleek design, offering an optimal ratio between external dimensions and internal volume.

An example is the Wertheim BG range — this series is distinguished by its exceptionally thin walls within resistance class II, combined with a clean and timeless design. Wertheim BG safes are manufactured in Austria and represent a high-end premium segment among EN 1143-1 Grade 2 burglary-resistant safes.

Grade 2 burglary- and fire-resistant safes (EN 1143-1)

Grade 2 burglary- and fire-resistant safes according to EN 1143-1 offer a well-balanced combination of reliable burglary protection and high fire resistance. Compared to higher burglary-resistance grades, resistance grade II allows for a significantly higher level of fire protection, making this grade particularly attractive for users looking for a Grade 2 fire safe with extended fire resistance.

This difference is technically explained. In higher burglary-resistance grades (Grade 3 and above), very high-density materials are used, such as high-performance concrete and UHPC, combined with steel reinforcement and armour layers. These materials are essential to achieve a high level of burglary resistance in accordance with EN 1143-1, but they are less effective as thermal insulation and conduct heat more rapidly.

With fire safes up to EN 1143-1 Grade 2, the construction can be more strongly optimised for thermal insulation, making it possible to comply with stricter fire-resistance standards, such as EN 1047-1. This demanding standard allows fire protection levels of up to 120 minutes for paper and even 120 minutes for data media.

As a result, a Grade 2 fire-resistant safe represents an excellent compromise between high fire protection and reliable burglary resistance according to EN 1143-1. Grade 2 safes and fire safes are therefore particularly suitable for applications where the protection of documents and data in the event of fire is at least as important as protection against theft.

Example of a Grade 2 burglary- and fire-resistant safe

A good example of a Grade 2 burglary- and fire-resistant safe is the Chubbsafes DuoGuard GII, as shown. This safe is certified in accordance with EN 1143-1 Grade II and additionally provides 90 minutes of fire protection for paper documents in accordance with the NT Fire 017 standard, tested at temperatures of up to approximately 927 °C by the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden.

The Chubbsafes DuoGuard GII is constructed using Dualite barrier material, offering protection against both burglary attempts and fire exposure. The three-sided locking system with solid steel bolts, combined with drill-resistant plates and internal relocking mechanisms, contributes to a reliable closure and increased resistance to forced entry attempts.

The safe can be fitted with an EN 1300-certified key lock or an electronic combination lock, and, on certain models, also with two locks. The range is available in multiple sizes, with internal volumes ranging from approximately 65 litres to over 400 litres.

Thanks to the combination of EN 1143-1 Grade 2 burglary resistance and 90 minutes of fire resistance for paper, the Chubbsafes DuoGuard GII represents a well-balanced compromise between protection against theft and fire damage, suitable for applications where both documents and other valuable assets need to be securely protected.
