Grade 6 safes | EN 1143-1 burglary and fire resistant

Grade 6 safes according to EN 1143-1 provide the highest certified level of burglary resistance within this standard, for applications with an extreme risk profile. For situations where a Grade 6 fire-resistant safe or Grade 6 60-minute fire resistance is required, selected models are available that, in addition to burglary certification, have also passed an additional fire resistance test to protect the stored contents.

Indicative insurable values – Grade 6 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade VI, the indicative insurable value is €250,000 in cash or €500,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may decide to allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 6 safes are certified in accordance with the European standard EN 1143-1 and represent the highest resistance level within this standard, intended for applications with an extreme risk profile. This standard evaluates resistance to burglary attempts using mechanical, electrical and thermal tools, carried out under strictly controlled test conditions by independent certification bodies such as ECB-S.

EN 1143-1 Grade 6 is applied where a maximum level of security is required, typically in highly secured professional environments. The classification serves as an objective reference for insurability, with the final conditions always determined by the insurer. Atelier Boonen advises and supports clients throughout Belgium in selecting solutions within this highest resistance grade.

Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For Grade 6, the resistance level is 270 RU for partial access and 400 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a large opening.

For certification to EN 1143-1 Grade 6, safes must be equipped with at least two locks, each certified in accordance with EN 1300, Class C. Depending on the model and application, this may involve a combination of mechanical and electronic locks. In specific professional applications, the locking configuration may be supplemented with optional features, such as a timelock, allowing access to be controlled through a time delay or a pre-set opening schedule.

The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to the burglary resistance of safes. Fire resistance is not an integral part of this standard and is always tested and certified separately in accordance with specific fire resistance standards. Within Grade 6, there are therefore both safes that are solely burglary-resistant and models that have undergone additional fire resistance testing. For applications requiring a Grade 6 fire-resistant safe or Grade 6 60-minute fire protection, selected models are available that, in addition to burglary certification, have also passed a separate fire test for paper.

Grade 6 safes

Burglary- and fire-resistant Grade 6 safes

Burglary- and fire-resistant Grade 6 safes are intended for applications requiring the highest possible level of security, providing protection against burglary, fire and extreme external influences. These safes combine burglary certification according to EN 1143-1 Grade 6 with an additional fire resistance test, carried out in accordance with a separate fire standard.

This type of Grade 6 fire-resistant safe is used where extremely high-value assets, critical documents or sensitive information media must be protected to the highest level, including in exceptional scenarios such as fire or severe external stress. As fire resistance is not an integral part of the EN 1143-1 standard, this performance is always tested and certified separately.

Depending on the model and the applied fire test, burglary- and fire-resistant Grade 6 safes may offer tested fire protection of 60 minutes for paper. These solutions are typically selected in environments where business continuity, regulatory compliance, insurability and maximum risk control are essential.

A representative example within EN 1143-1 Grade 6 is the Chubbsafes Triforce. This safe combines an extremely high level of burglary resistance certified to EN 1143-1 Grade 6 with certified fire protection and an explosion-resistant construction. The Triforce range is designed for applications where protection against burglary, fire and extreme conditions is critical and represents a reference solution within the highest security segment.
