Grade 6 safes | EN 1143-1 burglary and fire resistant

Grade 6 safes certified according to EN 1143-1 are the answer to the most extreme security requirements — built by a handful of specialist manufacturers for environments where an extreme risk profile demands an exceptional level of protection. Buying a Grade 6 safe means choosing heavy certified equipment for situations where burglary by international specialists using the most powerful tools available is a real scenario. For applications also requiring fire protection, Grade 6 fire-resistant safes are available.

Indicative insurable values – Grade 6 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade VI, the indicative insurable value is €250,000 in cash or €500,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may decide to allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 6 safes according to EN 1143-1

Grade 6 according to EN 1143-1 represents the highest certified resistance level accessible on the market for a limited number of very specific applications. Grade 6 safes provide resistance for an extreme risk profile, against exceptionally severe attacks carried out by international specialists using the most powerful tools available. Intended for applications where the value or sensitivity of the contents demands an exceptional level of security.

Grade 6 safes are tested and approved according to the European standard EN 1143-1, in which specialised test laboratories attempt to force the safe open using a variety of attack methods — mechanical tools (such as hand tools and crowbars), power tools (such as hammer drills and angle grinders) and thermal tools (cutting torches, thermal lance). These tests are carried out under strictly controlled conditions by independent bodies such as ECB·S.

Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For a Grade 6 safe, the resistance level is 270 RU for partial access and 400 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening through which a hand can be inserted, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a larger opening.

According to the standard, Grade 6 safes must be equipped with at least two locks, each approved to EN 1300, class C or higher. Class C imposes stricter requirements than class B — for combination locks, they must be spy-proof: mechanical and electronic combination locks may not have visible keypads, so that a code entered cannot be intercepted by a camera or by direct observation. Grade 6 safes are always heavy safes — compact or lightweight models do not exist in this class. The lightest available model weighs approximately 700 kg.

The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to burglary resistance; fire resistance is not part of this standard. Grade 6 safes therefore only provide burglary protection as standard. Where fire protection is also required, Grade 6 fire-resistant safes are available, combining EN 1143-1 burglary certification with fire protection certified to a separate fire standard — for example according to NT Fire 017 with 60 minutes of fire protection for paper.

Fire-resistant Grade 6 safes

Those requiring maximum protection against both burglary and fire choose a Grade 6 fire-resistant safe. These safes combine the certified EN 1143-1 Grade 6 burglary resistance with certified fire protection — two independently tested and certified properties in a single high-security construction.

Fire resistance is not part of the EN 1143-1 standard and is always tested separately according to a distinct fire standard. Depending on the model, a Grade 6 fire-resistant safe can provide 60 minutes of protection for paper documents — sufficient for most professional applications where the contents must also remain intact in the event of a fire.

A reference model in this segment is the Chubbsafes Triforce. This heavy safe combines EN 1143-1 Grade 6 burglary resistance with certified fire protection and an explosion-resistant construction — one of the most complete security solutions available in this class.
