Grade 5 safes | EN 1143-1 burglary and fire resistant

Grade 5 safes according to EN 1143-1 provide a very high level of burglary resistance for applications with a very high risk profile, such as the secure storage of large amounts of cash, high-value assets or sensitive records. Buying a Grade 5 safe means choosing a solution that meets the most stringent professional security requirements — used by banks, jewellers, diamond dealers and government institutions. For applications also requiring fire protection, Grade 5 fire-resistant safes are available.

Indicative insurable values – Grade 5 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade V, the indicative insurable value is €125,000 in cash or €250,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may decide to allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 5 safes according to EN 1143-1

Grade 5 according to EN 1143-1 represents for many applications the best choice in the high-security segment: it is the highest burglary resistance grade offered by a wide range of manufacturers, which gives Grade 5 safes a significantly more favourable price-quality ratio than Grade 6 or Grade 7 — grades built by only a handful of specialist manufacturers. In many countries, Grade 5 is also the highest grade commonly available for professional or private safes. From Grade 5 onwards, we are truly talking about high security. Grade 5 safes are intended for applications with a very high risk profile — where the value of the contents makes an intensive, targeted attack by a highly motivated and technically skilled intruder a real possibility.

Grade 5 safes are certified according to the European standard EN 1143-1, in which specialised test laboratories attempt to force the safe open using various attack methods — mechanical tools (such as hand tools and crowbars), power tools (such as hammer drills and angle grinders) and thermal tools (cutting torches, thermal lance). These tests are carried out under controlled conditions by independent certification bodies such as ECB·S.

Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For a Grade 5 safe, the resistance level is 180 RU for partial access and 270 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening through which a hand can be inserted, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a larger opening.

For certification, Grade 5 safes must be equipped with at least two locks, each certified to EN 1300, class B or higher. Class B locks offer a good combination of security and ease of use — unlike class C locks, which impose stricter requirements on operation (for example, class C electronic combination locks may not have visible keypads in order to prevent shoulder surfing), making them less practical for daily use. Grade 5 safes are typically heavy safes with considerable weight; exceptions are compact models such as the ATB Tercio and the Chubbsafes Vega, which combine Grade 5 security with a more manageable format.

The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to burglary resistance; fire resistance is not part of this standard. Grade 5 safes therefore only provide burglary protection as standard. Where fire protection is also required, Grade 5 fire-resistant safes are available, combining EN 1143-1 burglary certification with fire protection certified to a separate fire standard — for example according to NT Fire 017 with 60 minutes of fire protection for paper.

Burglary-tested Grade 5 safes

EN 1143-1 Grade 5 safes

Burglary-tested Grade 5 safes

Exclusively burglary-tested Grade 5 safes, certified in accordance with EN 1143-1, are intended for applications requiring a very high level of security, without the need for additional fire resistance testing. These safes are used where protection against heavy and prolonged burglary attacks is the primary requirement.

Within EN 1143-1 Grade 5, very stringent requirements apply to the construction and composition of the safe. The standard defines the resistance levels to be achieved but does not prescribe specific construction methods, allowing manufacturers to apply different materials and design solutions to meet the certification criteria.

A representative example is the Chubbsafes Vega M40, an EN 1143-1 Grade 5 certified safe that makes use of innovative barrier materials. For this specific model, the use of such materials allows a relatively controlled overall weight to be achieved while fully complying with the resistance requirements of Grade V. The Vega M40 is designed as a burglary-only solution, with maximum burglary resistance as its primary focus.

Fire-resistant Grade 5 safes

Fire-resistant Grade 5 safes

Fire-resistant Grade 5 safes are intended for applications requiring an exceptionally high level of security, both against burglary and against damage caused by fire. These safes combine burglary certification according to EN 1143-1 Grade 5 with an additional fire resistance test, carried out in accordance with a separate fire standard.

This type of Grade 5 fire-resistant safe is used where, in addition to very high-value assets, critical documents, archives or sensitive records must also remain protected in the event of a fire. As fire resistance is not an integral part of the EN 1143-1 standard, this performance is always tested and certified separately.

Depending on the model and the applied fire test, Grade 5 fire-resistant safes may provide tested fire protection of 60 minutes for paper. Such solutions are typically selected in environments where business continuity, regulatory compliance and maximum risk control are essential.

A representative example in this segment is the Fichet-Bauche InviKtus Grade 5. This safe combines very high burglary resistance certified to EN 1143-1 Grade 5 with certified fire protection and an explosion-resistant construction. The InviKtus range therefore illustrates solutions designed for applications where protection against burglary, fire and extreme conditions is critical.
