Grade 1 safes and fire safes | EN 1143-1 burglary and fire resistant

Grade 1 safes according to EN 1143-1 provide certified burglary resistance for applications with a low risk profile. Buying a Grade 1 safe means choosing a versatile solution — Grade 1 is available as a freestanding safe, wall safe, floor safe, gun safe and key safe. Like Grade 2, it is particularly suitable for those who want to combine high fire protection with reliable burglary resistance. For applications requiring burglary protection only, compact Grade 1 burglary-resistant safes are also available.

Indicative insurable values – Grade 1 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade I, the indicative insurable value is €10,000 in cash or €20,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may decide to allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 1 safes and fire safes according to EN 1143-1

Grade 1 safes are certified according to the European standard EN 1143-1 and provide resistance for a low risk profile — against an intruder with hand tools, crowbars and basic power tools with limited experience. Suitable for the secure storage of limited valuables and documents, in both private and professional environments.

During certification, specialised test laboratories attempt to force the safe open using mechanical tools such as hammers, chisels and crowbars, as well as power tools such as drills — under strictly controlled conditions by independent bodies such as ECB·S.

Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For a Grade 1 safe, the resistance level is 50 RU for partial access and 80 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening through which a hand can be inserted, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a larger opening.

The standard requires Grade 1 safes to be equipped with at least one lock certified to EN 1300, class A or higher. Depending on the model, a second lock can be added — a common combination pairs a key lock with an electronic or mechanical combination lock.

The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to burglary resistance — fire resistance is not part of this standard. Grade 1 safes therefore only provide burglary protection as standard. For those also requiring fire protection, Grade 1 fire-resistant safes are available — like Grade 2, Grade 1 allows compliance with the most stringent fire standards, such as EN 1047-1 with 120 minutes of protection for paper and data carriers.

EN 1143-1 Grade 1 safes and fire safes

Burglary-resistant Grade 1 safes

Grade 1 safes exclusively tested against burglary according to EN 1143-1 are intended for applications where a certified basic level of burglary resistance is sufficient and no additional fire protection is required. This type is often chosen when discretion and integration take priority over combined protection.

The absence of a fire-resistant construction allows for a lighter and more compact design. Thinner walls and an efficiently designed door make it possible to integrate the safe discreetly into furniture or existing cabinets, without compromising on certified burglary resistance.

A representative example is the Chubbsafes Consul — an EN 1143-1 Grade 1 certified safe with a compact format and functional door construction. Thanks to its limited external dimensions, this model is particularly well suited for discreet placement, for example built into a cabinet or piece of furniture.

Grade 1 fire-resistant safes

Grade 1 fire-resistant safes combine a certified basic level of burglary resistance according to EN 1143-1 with extensive fire protection. As burglary resistance in Grade 1 is achieved without extremely dense and heat-conducting construction materials, this grade allows the design to be strongly optimised for thermal insulation. This makes it possible to offer safes that meet stringent fire standards, including EN 1047-1.

Depending on the model and the applied fire standard, Grade 1 fire-resistant safes can provide 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes of protection for paper — and, for certain models, up to 120 minutes for data carriers. These safes are particularly suitable for applications where the protection of important documents, deeds, wills and digital media in the event of fire is essential, such as for notaries, legal professionals and administrative environments.

A clear reference in this segment is the Chubbsafes DuoGuard GI — certified burglary-resistant according to EN 1143-1 Grade 1 and fire-tested to the stringent EN 1047-1 standard with 60 minutes of protection for paper. The fire test includes not only prolonged exposure to high temperatures, but also an impact and controlled cooling phase simulating realistic fire scenarios. The range is available in various formats and can be equipped with mechanical or electronic locks.

EN 1143-1 Grade 1: different safe types and applications

Within EN 1143-1 Grade 1, several safe types are available, all providing the same certified basic level of burglary resistance but differing in installation method and application. These include Grade 1 wall safes and Grade 1 floor safes, designed for integration into the building structure and often chosen for their discreet placement and limited visibility.

Grade 1 also includes Grade 1 gun safes, meeting the standard requirements for the secure storage of firearms, and Grade 1 key safes, intended for controlled key management in professional and administrative environments. Each of these categories is based on EN 1143-1, while being tailored to a specific use case.

Through this variety of wall safes, floor safes, gun safes and key safes, EN 1143-1 Grade 1 is applied in a wide range of contexts, both private and professional, always with a clearly defined and insurable level of security.
