Grade 0 safes are certified according to the European standard EN 1143-1 and are used for security solutions with a low risk profile. They are suitable for the secure storage of limited valuables and documents in situations where a standard-compliant basic level of burglary resistance is sufficient.
During certification, specialised test laboratories attempt to force the safe open using mechanical hand tools and drills — under strictly controlled conditions by independent bodies such as ECB·S.
Under EN 1143-1, burglary resistance is expressed in Resistance Units (RU). For a Grade 0 safe, the resistance level is 30 RU for partial access and 50 RU for full access. Partial access refers to the creation of a limited opening through which a hand can be inserted, while full access implies complete access to the contents, for example by opening the door or creating a larger opening.
The EN 1143-1 standard applies exclusively to burglary resistance — fire resistance is not part of this standard. For those also requiring fire protection, models with additional fire certification are available.
A well-known example is the Fichet-Bauche Complice — available as a freestanding safe with 30 minutes of fire protection for paper certified according to LFS 30P, and as a wall safe for discreet integration into the building structure, tested exclusively against burglary.
