EN 1143-1 Grade 0 safes and fire safes

Grade 0 safes and fire safes according to EN 1143-1 provide a certified basic level of burglary resistance for low-risk applications. This resistance grade is applied where standards-compliant security is required and the focus lies on straightforward, functional protection of limited values.

Indicative insurable values – Grade 0 safe (EN 1143-1)

For resistance grade 0, the indicative insurable value is €5,000 in cash or €10,000 in valuables. This indication is based on standard storage conditions in an unattended and unsecured building. Where additional security measures are in place, the insurer may decide to allow a higher level of coverage.

Grade 0 safes and fire safes according to EN 1143-1

Grade 0 safes and fire safes are tested and certified in accordance with the European standard EN 1143-1 and are used for security applications with a low risk profile. They are suitable for the secure storage of limited values and documents in situations where a standards-compliant basic level of burglary resistance is sufficient.

The EN 1143-1 standard assesses the resistance of safes to controlled burglary attacks using mechanical hand tools and drilling, carried out according to defined and reproducible test methods by independent certification bodies. Even within Grade 0, this certification provides an objective basis for insurability, with the final conditions always determined by the insurer.

A well-known example within EN 1143-1 Grade 0 is the Fichet-Bauche Complice. Despite its classification in resistance grade 0, this safe stands out for its solid construction and high-quality finish. The Complice is available as a freestanding safe, which can be supplied with an additional fire resistance certification, and as a built-in wall safe, designed for discreet integration into the building structure and tested exclusively for burglary resistance.

Thanks to these different configurations, the Fichet-Bauche Complice is often used in practice where a reliable, standards-compliant safe is required, without the need for a higher resistance grade. It therefore provides a clear and realistic example of how EN 1143-1 Grade 0 can be applied in both residential and professional environments.
