A burglary-resistant safe (or strongbox) is a security cabinet specifically designed to withstand burglary attempts. These safes are tested according to the European standard EN 1143-1, which measures resistance against attack methods such as drilling, grinding, prying and thermal tools.
Based on these tests, safes are assigned a security grade (resistance grade):
-
Grade 0 to VI → standard safes, suitable for private and professional use
-
Grade VII to XIII → vault rooms and high-security installations
These safes are often also referred to as Eurosafes, as they are built and certified according to harmonised European standards.
The right grade depends on the value stored, the risk profile and insurance requirements. For professional use, Grade III to VI is often required.
