Not yet. There is currently no European standard (EN) for cabinets used to store or charge lithium-ion batteries. The reference is the German specification VDMA 24994 (August 2024 edition). It tests a cabinet against a fire that starts inside, for example a battery in thermal runaway, and against a fire from outside. A certificate, for example from ECB·S, confirms that a model meets this specification.
A European standard is, however, being prepared at CEN/TC 263, the European standards committee that also draws up the standards for safes. It builds on VDMA 24994. As of November 2026, the draft is expected at the end of 2026, and the final standard will follow after a comment period. Until then, VDMA 24994 remains the reference.
EN 14470-1 is a European standard, but for cabinets for flammable liquids: it tests a fire from outside, not a battery fire inside the cabinet. How VDMA 24994 tests a cabinet and what the classes I/O30, I/O60 and I/O90 mean is explained on our page about VDMA 24994.
