Where should alkalis (bases) be stored?

Alkalis, also called bases, such as caustic soda, caustic potash, ammonia solution or drain cleaners, are corrosive. Store them in a cabinet for acids and alkalis, in their own compartment with its own sump and away from acids: the Code requires incompatible products to be stored separately. Preferably place them low down, below eye level, in their original, tightly closed packaging.

Choose a cabinet made of corrosion-resistant material: vapours from acids and alkalis can attack an ordinary metal cabinet, and caustic soda reacts with aluminium. Ammonia gives off vapours, so a cabinet that can be connected to extraction is a good choice. Keep bleach away from acids and from ammonia. See our cabinets for acids and alkalis.
