A fire-resistant safe is specifically designed to protect its contents against fire for a defined period of time. Not all safes or so-called “fireproof cabinets” are truly fire-resistant: only tested and certified models provide reliable protection in the event of a fire.
A distinction is made between fire resistance for paper documents and for digital media, as these materials deteriorate at different temperatures. Paper begins to char at higher temperatures, while digital media can be damaged at relatively low temperatures or when exposed to increased humidity.
