Cash deposit safes, night safes and deposit systems
A deposit safe lets staff or customers deposit valuables securely into the safe without having access to its contents. Most often that means cash and cheques, but just as easily car keys and vehicle documents — think of garages and leasing companies — or any valuables that need to be secured outside opening hours. Deposits are made through a slot, flap, drawer or rotary drum; only authorised persons can open the safe. That keeps the risk limited, even with changing shifts.
Cash deposit safes secure till money progressively, keeping the value in the till itself to a minimum. There are also night safes and through-the-wall deposit solutions, allowing deposits from outside the building or from an adjacent room.
Some models are certified to EN 1143-2, the specific standard for deposit systems and night safes, up to deposit grade D5 — recognisable by the grade symbol on the product photo; grade D5 is available on request.
Every deposit system is built to make depositing easy and retrieval next to impossible. The deposit opening — slot, flap, drawer or drum — features an anti-fishing construction that makes it extremely difficult to fish contents back out with a wire, magnet or other tool. Some deposit systems are locked after use with a key, code or badge; others are designed to guarantee optimal security even without locking. When choosing, check the passage size of the opening: it determines what you can deposit, from banknotes and sealbags to key bundles or document wallets.
Certified deposit safes do not fall under EN 1143-1, the standard for regular safes: the deposit opening requires its own test programme. On certain safes, a deposit slot is available as a factory option; having one cut afterwards, however, voids the certificate. This is why EN 1143-2 exists, testing not only the safe but also the deposit mechanism against manipulation and fishing attempts. Resistance grades run from D0 to D5, each linked to an indicative insurable value. Grade D5, the highest level, is available on request.
At the till itself, skimming safes do the work: compact safes into which surplus cash is secured immediately, keeping the value in the till to a minimum. For larger volumes — daily takings, sealbags — a more spacious deposit safe in a higher resistance grade is the answer. Garages and leasing companies use deposit systems for car keys and vehicle documents handed in outside opening hours, and where deposits from outside are needed — after closing time or through the façade — a night safe or through-the-wall deposit system is the solution. Most safes can also be fitted with a connection for a pneumatic tube system, sending valuables straight from the till or counter into the safe.
