Burglary-Resistant Safes

Burglary-resistant safes are designed to protect your documents, valuables and sensitive items against theft and break-in attempts. Every model in this range is tested by accredited independent institutes and certified to strict European standards.

Each safe carries a resistance level or grade indicating how well it withstands a break-in attempt. The range extends from levels S1 and S2 under EN 14450, intended for lower-risk applications, up to Grade 6 under EN 1143-1 for the most demanding private and professional use. The resistance grade is the key criterion when choosing a certified safe suited to the value of your belongings and your insurer's requirements.

A burglary-resistant safe offers no certified fire protection. Models combining certified burglary resistance with tested fire protection can be found in our range of fire-resistant safes. Which resistance grade do you need, how are safes tested, and what may your insurer require? You'll find the answers below.

safe certified to EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 carries a resistance grade or level, each linked to indicative insurable values. Your insurer ultimately determines which grade, anchoring and additional security measures your situation requires.

During the certification test, specialised technicians attempt to force a partial or full opening in the safe using a range of tools. The tools used, the time required and the resistance offered by the construction determine the protection level achieved. The full overview of standards, resistance grades, test methods and indicative insurable values can be found on our page about burglary resistance grades and test methods.

A certified burglary-resistant safe can be recognised by the metal certification plate on the inside of the door, stating among other things the applicable standard, the resistance grade and the certificate number. Without this plate, the claimed certification cannot be verified and your insurer may refuse the stated burglary resistance. Never judge a safe solely by its weight, wall thickness or robust appearance — this matters all the more when buying from foreign webshops that ship uncertified safes to Belgium.

The range includes compact burglary-resistant safes for documents, jewellery and other valuables as well as large high-security models for businesses and professional applications. Besides the resistance grade, consider the internal and external dimensions, the weight, the lock type and the intended installation location.

The safe is anchored to the floor or wall in line with the applicable installation requirements. Delivery, installation and anchoring are included, in 95% of cases at no extra charge, even on upper floors.

Frequently asked questions

The best safe doesn't exist — what does exist is the best safe for your situation. A jeweller has different needs than a private individual. An office faces different risks than a pharmacy. And a fireproof safe doesn't protect against burglary in the same way as a certified burglary-resistant safe.

Some essential criteria:

  • Against what — burglary, fire or both?
  • What value — the resistance grade determines the value that can be stored safely
  • What volume — does a specific object need to fit inside? Think of a firearm, a laptop or an A4 folder
  • What type of lock — key, mechanical combination or electronic? With or without emergency key?
  • Where — freestanding, built-in or in a cupboard?
  • What budget — a grade 1 safe is accessible, a grade 6 represents a significant investment
