Not every safe offers the same protection. Certified safes and vaults are independently tested by recognised bodies such as ECB·S and classified in resistance grades — an objective measure of the level of protection against burglary and/or fire.

For burglary resistance, grades run from S1 and S2 up to Grade 0 through 13. The higher the grade, the greater the resistance to attacks with professional tools — and the higher the insurable value your insurer recognises. For fire resistance, the grade determines how long the internal temperature stays below the critical threshold: around 170°C for paper documents, around 55°C for digital media.

A certified safe is recognisable by the metal ECB·S plate on the inside of the door, stating the standard and resistance grade. Non-certified products offer no guarantee whatsoever — not for your security, and not for your insurer.

A burglary-resistant safe protects cash, jewellery and valuable documents against theft, certified to EN 1143-1 in Grades 0 through 6 — the higher the grade, the higher the indicative insurable value your insurer recognises. Which grade you need depends on the value you want to protect; if you also want certified fire protection, choose a dual-certified fire-resistant safe.

Fire-resistant cabinets protect paper, archives and digital media exclusively against fire, without burglary certification — document cabinets, archive cabinets and data safes all belong to this category. If you also need certified theft protection, choose a fire-resistant safe with dual certification.

Wall safes and floor safes are bricked into a wall or set into the floor and are barely visible once installed — a wall safe hides behind a painting, mirror or piece of furniture, a floor safe is next to invisible. Both types are available up to Grade 1, with the surrounding concrete becoming part of the protection; if you want to build in a higher grade discreetly, have a compact free-standing safe bricked in. Prefer not to brick anything in? A compact furniture safe fits in a cabinet or dressing room — anchored, from Grade S2 to Grade 5.
