Not every safe offers the same level of protection. Certified safes and fire-resistant cabinets are independently tested by recognised bodies such as ECB·S and classified according to resistance grades — an objective measure of the level of security against burglary and/or fire.

For burglary resistance, grades range from S1 and S2 up to Grade 0 through XIII. The higher the grade, the greater the resistance against attacks with professional tools — and the higher the insured value recognised by your insurer. For fire resistance, the grade indicates how long the interior temperature stays below the critical threshold: approximately 170°C for paper documents, approximately 50°C for digital media.

A certified safe is recognisable by the metal ECB·S label on the inside of the door, stating the applicable standard and resistance grade. Non-certified products offer no guarantee whatsoever — not for your security, and not for your insurer.

A burglar-resistant safe is a freestanding or furniture safe designed to resist burglary attempts. It is tested and certified in accordance with EN 1143-1, with resistance grades from 0 to VII. This classification defines the level of resistance against various attack tools and provides a reliable indication of security performance.

A burglar-resistant safe offers protection against theft and forced entry, but no certified fire protection. Models range from compact versions of around 16 litres to large safes exceeding 1 000 litres, suitable for professional use. All safes can be securely anchored to the floor and/or wall.

Fireproof cabinets – also referred to as document safes, archive cabinets, or data safes – are designed specifically to provide protection against fire. Each unit is tested and certified in accordance with international fire-resistance standards, ensuring that paper files and digital media remain safe when exposed to extreme heat.

Unlike burglar-resistant safes, these cabinets are not intended to withstand forced entry, but can be equipped with high-security locking systems to prevent unauthorized access and protect confidential information.

The fire rating is determined by how long the internal temperature remains below the critical threshold at which paper or data media would be damaged. Fireproof cabinets are freestanding and available in a variety of sizes and configurations, suitable for office and archive environments.

Installing a built-in safe – either as a wall safe or a floor safe – makes it less visible and therefore much harder to locate or remove. A concealed safe provides an additional layer of protection against theft and tampering.

Built-in safes are not fire-tested and offer burglary protection up to Grade I only. A compact freestanding safe, such as our ATB Bravo grade 3 safe, can also be built into a wall when a higher level of security or discretion is required.

During installation, it is essential to ensure there is at least 10 cm of concrete around all sides of the wall or floor safe to guarantee proper anchoring and protection.
