Fire resistant safes

A fire-resistant safe combines certified burglary protection with tested fire protection. This is why it is also known as a fireproof safe. The models in this range protect your documents, valuables and other sensitive contents against both risks at once.

Burglary resistance extends from levels S1 and S2 under EN 14450 up to Grade 7 under EN 1143-1, the highest resistance grade in the range. The right grade depends on the value of the contents and your insurer's requirements — for private use as well as for businesses and institutions.

For fire protection, what matters most is what you want to protect. Paper documents are damaged from around 170 °C, while digital media such as hard drives and magnetic tapes are affected from around 55 °C. The required fire resistance standard therefore depends on the material and the desired protection time.

Two questions determine which fire-resistant safe you need: how much value requires burglary protection, and what must survive a fire? On the burglary side, the resistance grade under EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 sets both the level of protection and the indicative value that can be stored. Insurers base their requirements on this grade and on proper anchoring; if no insurer is involved, the grade remains your best benchmark for matching protection to contents. On the fire side, the standard tells the real story. Lighter standards such as EN 15659 (LFS 30P or 60P) and NT Fire 017 certify paper protection for 30 to 120 minutes, but the test ends when the clock stops — there is no cooling phase. EN 1047-1, the strictest standard, adds a drop test and a natural cooling phase, which matters because a safe stays hot for hours after a real fire, with the internal temperature still climbing. Digital media need their own classifications (S60D, S120DIS) with far lower temperature limits — though for most paper-rated models, an optional fire-resistant inner compartment for digital media saves you buying a separate data safe. A genuine fire-resistant safe carries a certification plate inside the door showing both the burglary grade and the fire certificate. Be wary of cabinets marked only "DIN 4102 compliant" — that standard covers the material, not the contents — and of foreign webshops shipping uncertified safes to Belgium, where an impressive-looking box may protect very little. If you only need fire protection without burglary certification, our fire-resistant cabinets are likely the more suitable and more economical choice.

Bear in mind that fire insulation thickens the walls: for the same external size, a fire-resistant safe holds less inside than a burglary-only safe, so always check the internal dimensions against what you plan to store. Delivery, installation and anchoring are included, in 95% of cases at no extra charge, even on upper floors.

Atelier Boonen takes care of the delivery, installation and anchoring of safes entirely in-house. We never use external transporters or installers. Using specialised transport equipment, we deliver discreetly and safely, including to upper floors or hard-to-reach locations. Safes are always wrapped in opaque film and transported in unmarked vehicles to avoid curious eyes.

For safes up to 1000 kg, anchoring is mandatory under the European standard EN 1143-1. We carry out this anchoring carefully, using chemical anchors or adapted solutions depending on the substrate. Where necessary, we use stair climbers and protective materials to safeguard floors, walls and staircases.

The installation is always carried out safely, efficiently and with respect for the building. This guarantees you a professionally executed installation offering the strongest and most durable solution. The terms "fireproof safe", "fire-safe" and "fire-resistant safe" are widely used, but no safe is completely fireproof. A certified fire-resistant safe is tested at temperatures of 800°C and above, and offers a guaranteed protection time that is sufficient in practice to survive a domestic fire.

What does exist is a certified fire-resistant safe that protects its contents for a defined period, or a fire-resistant cabinet offering fire protection only. Only certified models offer proven protection.

A fire- and burglary-resistant safe protects your valuables against both theft and fire. Dual certification means the safe has been tested and approved separately for both aspects.
Burglary resistance is certified according to security level S1/S2 (EN 14450) for entry-level models and limited values, or according to grades 0 to 6 (EN 1143-1) for professionally certified safes — the higher the grade, the higher the insurable value. Fire resistance is tested separately, for example according to EN 15659 or NT Fire 017, and ranges from 30 to 120 minutes of protection. Note the difference between paper documents and digital media such as hard drives or USB sticks: digital data is damaged at much lower temperatures.
Only safes with dual certification offer genuinely tested resistance against both fire and burglary.

The stated fire resistance of a safe (for example 30, 60, or 120 minutes) refers to the duration of the test phase in a controlled fire laboratory test. In practice, the contents often remain protected for much longer, as some fire-resistant safes go through a cool-down period after the fire is extinguished. During this phase, the internal temperature may continue to rise, but well-designed safes keep it below the critical level at which documents or data media would be damaged.

Not all testing standards include this cool-down phase — it depends on the fire-resistance standard and the specific test method used.

No, not automatically — the two certifications are independent of each other. A [fire-resistant cabinet keeps the internal temperature under control during a fire, but offers no certified resistance against burglary. A fire-resistant safe from our range, on the other hand, is doubly certified: both fire-resistant and burglar-resistant according to EN 1143-1. If you want protection against both fire and theft, choose a model with both certifications — and ask for this explicitly when purchasing.
