A certified safe has been tested by a recognised, independent test institute and complies with strict European standards — unlike non-certified models, which offer no demonstrable guarantee of their actual security level. The difference lies in the independent testing: for burglary resistance, EN 1143-1 provides the framework, with resistance grades based on defined attack methods, tools and attack duration; for fire resistance, separate fire standards and test methods apply. The higher the grade, the greater the resistance — and the higher the indicative insurable value.
You can recognise a certified safe by the metal certification plate on the inside of the door, stating the standard, the resistance grade and the certification number. If that plate is missing, the safe is not certified — and your insurer will judge it accordingly.
