The range extends from levels S1 and S2 under EN 14450, intended for lower-risk applications, up to Grade 6 under EN 1143-1 for the most demanding private and professional use. A safe certified to EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 carries a resistance grade or level, each linked to indicative insurable values. Your insurer ultimately determines which grade, anchoring and additional security measures your situation requires.
During the certification test, specialised technicians attempt to force a partial or full opening in the safe using a range of tools. The tools used, the time required and the resistance offered by the construction determine the protection level achieved. A certified burglary-resistant safe can be recognised by the metal certification plate on the inside of the door, stating among other things the applicable standard, the resistance grade and the certificate number. Without this plate, the claimed certification cannot be verified and your insurer may refuse the stated burglary resistance. Never judge a safe solely by its weight, wall thickness or robust appearance — this matters all the more when buying from foreign webshops that ship uncertified safes to Belgium.
